Multi-Core 3D Rendering Engine
April 2009

With Multi-Core processors becoming widespread, 3DSTATE's next generation 3D Engine will squeeze the full potential out of the next generation CPUs.
It will probably take another year for us to complete the development of the new 3D Engine.
Multi-Core 3D rendering Engine is just one of the new features.
We also plan to support Shader model 5 , DirectX 11 (Windows 7 OS).

In short it, is going to be an exciting year !!!

New Free SDK ! C\C++ [ 93MB]
April 2009

Now students and thousands of users of our old 3D Developer Studio can enjoy one of the best 3D engines with superb graphics and lightning speed !

Until today, our 3D Developer studio was based on the old 3D engine version 6. We have decided to upgrade the free package so that now students all over the world can enjoy the power and speed of our latest 3D engine with graphics quality that is seen in commercial games.

Important note: This SDK shows just some of the new features. The older SDK (using version 6 of the engine) is much more comprehensive and a good starting point for learning programming games and 3D applications.
The programming style of this SDK and the old one are almost identical
In short it is a good idea to download the older SDK as well.
The old SDK is slower, the graphics are not as good as in the new one
but there is a lot of sample code there and documents.
You can even take any demo included in the old SDK and just by including the new 3dstate8.lib
and the 3dstate8.dll convert it to run on the new 3D Engine !

To download the new SDK click here

To download the older 3D Developer Studio click here (VB.NET , Delphi, C#, C/C++, Borland C++, VB 6.0)

Human Character Demo + Source Code [ 3MB]

The Demo comes with full source code. Versions in VB. NET, C#, Delphi and others could also be obtained.

Once you master this short and simple sample code you can easily use thousands of free models available on the Internet.

Human characters are an essential part of many 3D applications: games, simulators and others. Lately I was called to assist several projects whose developers found themselves spending too much time on these issues. Sometimes ten times as much as they had planned in their original schedule.

During my 11 years of experience managing software projects, I believe this to be one of the most critical issues for all 3D based application development.

The key to success is having a robust and simple interface (set of functions) to control the 3D animation.

The source code included is short and simple demonstrating the fundamentals of operating 3D characters.

-          Changing animation sequences
-          Changing the animation skin
-          Connecting smoothly between different animation sequences
-          Moving the character
-          Attaching a weapon or a tool to the object
-          Controlling different body parts separately (the head, the legs etc)

The sample code demonstrates how you can do all that with a very simple short and clear code.

Another tip is to use a well known file format for the 3D character. Don’t try to reinvent your own format … For some reason it seems that every company feels obliged to invent its own format (and then its own converters, editors etc)
I have deliberately chosen a small 3D character (less than 1mb) that could also be used for online Internet applications.

And one last word, one of the 3D characters is naked and others might not be dressed according to the liking of all religions so if you are sensitive to those issues, restrict yourself to just looking at the source code

 Enjoy !

 Jonathan,

3DS MAX 5 and 3DS MAX 6 Converter  (Author Vasbin - BEV Team )

Make your 3D World look exactly as it looks in 3DS MAX including shadows, lighting and many other effects.

Here is how:

1. Download the converter and add the the 3ds script file to 3DS MAX Scripts directory ( the *.ms file)

1. Inside 3DS Max add lighting shadows and other effects till your Max world looks really good.

2. From the Rendering menu choose Render To Texture

3. Select Channel 2 and LightingMap and then click on the Render button (you can also increase the lightmap size to at least 768x768 for better results)

4. Converting the world to 3DSTATE wld format. Run the script (Tools->Max Scripts -> Run Script) and that's all !

5. [Optional] Convert the wld file (text format) into the 3dstate file format (binary format). This will speed up the time it takes to load a world significantly. You can do it by loading the wld file and then calling STATE_engine_save() or by using these tools (wld to 3dstate converter and a simple viewer)

You can now load the converted world from your code !

Many thanks to Vasbin of the BEV Team for his great work !

Note the soft edges of the shadows and how the shadows overlap nicely.

3D Engine V7.31 Release

Requires DirectX 9 or above

New release of 3DSTATE 3D Engine V7. The new version is available only for commercial license owners. Customers who already have version 7 can contact sales @ 3dstate . com and request the new release.

The zip file contains several demos that everyone can download and run. The new demos focus on new features that are not available with version 6. Several of the new features require a modern 3D card.

The new release contains many new features such as shadow volumes, font engine, alpha channel, direct texture access, more 2D functions, bump mapping, environment mapping and many more. Some of the features are not available with old 3D cards.

Like always, the usage of the new features is extremely clear and simple and usually involves calling only one or two functions.

WindsSoft LightMap Maker

Lightmaps are probably the best and fastest way to increase your world realism significantly.
In 3DSTATE each polygon could have two textures. The second texture is blended with the first one. Lightmaps are actually second textures that are specifically created to match the lighting effects in the scene. This utility will help you create photo realistic lightmaps that you can use with your 3DSTATE worlds.

Shadow Volume Demo

3DSTATE 3D Engine 7.3 supports Shadow Volume techniques. The screenshot at the right side is taken from this demo. Note the plane shadow on the ground and the shadow on the lower wing cast by the upper wing. The upcoming Doom 3 supports similar technique for creating shadows. Like always, the usage of the new feature is extremely clear and simple and involves calling only one function (see below).
This demo also demonstrates several other improved features. The new version is extremely fast and shows high quality graphics. The world in this demo is built from more than 63000 polygons. 60000 use two textures simultaneously ! The world is lit and has fog and above all it uses shadow volumes (press S to remove the shadows and gain more FPS).

STATE_object_auto_add_shadows(plane_object, ON, 1);
This is all it takes to turn on Shadows for the plane object !

3DSTATE 3D Engine Version 7.01 Alpha

The Alpha version (7.01 alpha) doesn’t include many of the new features of version 7 though it is very stable and very fast. We recommend that users of version 6.0 who need the extra speed to move to version 7.
Version 7 is certainly one of the fastest engines that exist today.

Version 7.0 can render dynamic objects about 20 times faster than version 6.0 ! Multi textured and lit objects are rendered very efficiently (very close to hardware specification limitations! )

The 3D Engine file is named 3dstate7S.dll . 7 stands for version 7. The ‘S’ stands for student version.

Version 7.0 uses Microsoft DirectX 9.0
Make sure you have DirectX 9.0 run-time installed.
DirectX 9.0 can be downloaded from Microsoft website:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx90.asp

The included lib file can be used by users of Microsoft Visual C++

1- The current revolution in the 3D Engine arena

During the last year we have witnessed a real revolution in the 3D arena, the last generation of programmable 3D cards having opened endless possibilities for real-time 3D graphics. The new possibilities have also created a strong demand for fast engines that can easily utilize the new available features with little effort by the programmer. Imagine a 3D engine that lets you set advance effects using one or two commands. You just say "make this water" and "these are clouds" or use any of the countless Shaders and Effects available freely on the Internet (see Nvidia /ATI / Microsoft developer sites). The 3DSTATE engine was always known for its simplicity and fast learning curve. There are no data types, no COM objects just simple set and get functions. With the upcoming version 7.0, the 3DSTATE engine will not just be simple to use but will also present one of the best available 3D graphics qualities. See item "2" for description of version 7.0 features.

2- Features of the upcoming 3DSTATE engine version 7.0

DirectX 9.0 SDK users and OpenGl programmers will appreciate this new version. On the one hand it is flexible enough so that you can easily use any shader or effect; on the other hand it releases the programmer from daily overhead which takes most of the programming time and doesn't leave enough time for developing the game / 3D application itself. To demonstrate how easy and fast our new engine is, we will release a Direct3D 9.0 SDK equivalent which will have most of the original DirectX 9.0 samples running with the 3DSTATE engine. This way it is possible to compare speed, rendering quality, and the simplicity of the code. The 3DSTATE V7.0 Engine is based on Microsoft Direct3D 9.0;  this ensures compatibility with all in use 3D cards. Even though the 3DSTATE engine is based on Direct3D, in many cases it manages to deliver faster FPS (than the equivalent D3D sample).

Below is a list of version 7.0 features:

1. Shaders
2. Microsoft HLSL (High-level Shader language)
3. Environment mapping
4. Cubic texturing
5. Shadow volume
6. DirectX X files
7. DirectX Meshes
8. Bump mapping
9. Antialiasing
10. Height Fog
11. Procedural texturing
12. Built in many water and under water effects.
13. An improved physics engine.
14. Reflections
15. Surface deformation.
16. Improved 2D sprites / layers
17. And all version 6.0 features such as mipmapping, trilinear filtering, Quake MD files and BSP files.

Demos using the new version will be available in the coming month. The release date of version 7.0 has not been set as yet but we estimate it to be in 3-4 months' time. Customers purchasing version 6.0 during March will receive a free upgrade when version 7.0 is released.

3- Get your game published with Activision.

Activision, the number two games publisher in the US, is putting together a compilation of games to be released in May of this year. 3DSTATE (formerly known as Morfit) users that own a completed game are invited to contact us for more details. The collection will be a PC CD-ROM containing over 100 games, sold in jewel case format in outlets such as Wal-Mart, Target, and other locations.  These games
should be original games, compatible with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.  What is
unique about this compilation is that none of the games will be shareware or
try-before-you-buy.

The end of virtual tradeshow services.

During the last two years, Morfit had invested all its efforts in the virtual trade show business in an attempt to capture the lead in this evolving market. The first steps were very promising. Morfit had managed to join forces and sign contracts with leading firms in the tradeshow industry. Among its success stories there are names such as Comdex, Internet World and Irchem. The worldwide slowdown and the deep recession in the high-tech industries had an enormous impact  on tradeshows aimed for the high-tech sector. Unfortunately this was exactly the Morfit target clientele.  That and other factors have led Morfit to discontinue these services. Users of Morfit Expomaker tools package can get support and help from 3DSTATE.
